Man Utd’s Paul Pogba was the Most Mentioned Footballer on Twitter in 2017

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba was the most mentioned footballer on Twitter throughout 2017, with only Conor McGregor beating the Frenchman to the title of most mentioned sportsman.

The boffins and statisticians at Twitter HQ have been compiling the numbers from between December 1 2016 through to December 1 2017 and it turns out Manchester United feature quite prominently in the top 10.

According to the Mirror, Pogba and his Old Trafford team-mate Romelu Lukaku were mentioned more times in the last 12 months than the likes of Cristiano Ronald or Neymar, and Jose Mourinho even makes it into the list too.

Pogba has always been a big user of social media, whilst Lukaku received a lot of high-profile coverage during the lead-up to his big-money move to Old Trafford last summer.

Here is the list of the top 10 mentioned athletes in full:

  1. Conor McGregor
  2. Paul Pogba
  3. Romelu Lukaku
  4. Jose Mourinho
  5. Floyd Mayweather
  6. Wayne Rooney
  7. Neymar
  8. Cristiano Ronaldo
  9. Philippe Coutinho
  10. Arsene Wenger

Personally, we thought Arsene Wenger might be a lot higher, considering the massive presence Arsenal supporters have on Twitter, but what do you make of the list?
