Michael O’Neill has officially turned down the Scotland manager’s job today – and the nations followers are pointing the finger at Stewart Regan and the SFA.
Scotland have been without a manager since sacking Gordon Starchan back in October, following the failure to reach the playoffs for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, and O’Neill was quickly installed as the standout candidate and front-runner for the job.
His work as Northern Ireland boss over the past two years, the fact he lives in Edinburgh and has worked within Scottish football previously made O’Neill an attractive candidate, but the 48-year-old has turned down the opportunity and now looks set to sign a new deal with the IFA.
It’s important to remember that every team – no matter who they are – can see their preferred candidate turn them down, but turn them down after three months of searching?
It’s that fact which seems to have sparked a lot of anger aimed at Stewart Regan and the rest of the SFA’s selection panel:
Regan must go #sacktheboard @ScottishFA

I wonder of THIS will force Stewart Regan to resign from @ScottishFA ?

So the @ScottishFA let a solid opportunity for a manager pass them by over pennies. With the budget Scotland are working with, prepare to be underwhelmed when Plan B is conceived and put in place. Cos it doesn’t exist just now!! Regan should walk for this…. but he won’t

Head of SFA has released a statement over Michael O'Neill snubbing Scotland "We were looking fwd to working together with our wonderful world class players Tierney, Brown & Griffiths at Scotland's new national stadium at Celtic Park". And Peter Lawwell added "Regan get your coat"

SFA are a shambles from top to bottom. Time for a clearout. Who in their right mind would want to work under Stewart Regan?! ?

Hard to blame O'Neill. Regan is such a thoroughly unimpressive man, he's probably not sold him the job properly and he decided against working for such an incompetent. We'll likely end up with #Malky and can look forward to another decade in the wilderness

SFA clusterfuck again. Regan must go. https://t.co/pcQ1HmuiQz

Yet another failure under the stewardship of Stewart Regan

So, Regan has been made a complete cunt of, again, and this one has been done very publicly.
Not that he had much to begin with, but all credibility has now gone.
Hopefully he'll soon be gone too.

As if the high heid yins at the SFA couldn't look anymore incompetent they stoop to even more wonderous levels. #shambles

No Michael O’Neill doesn’t surprise me, suppose it would be foolish to assume that the SFA would go all out to try and secure him
— Rory Clark (@rgjclark) January 22, 2018
What a joke, SFA took far too long to offer him the job. Need find someone else with a similar record internationally https://t.co/YcmAe4RgD9

Wot a embarrassment the sfa can’t convince a guy that lives in our capital country n manages a far smaller country unbelievable

What do you think of the whole sorry episode? And who should the SFA turn to next?
