The pair knew each other well from the Holland national set-up and Numan has confirmed he was asked by then Gers boss Dick Advocaat to approach his international colleague over a potential return to Glasgow, several years after he’d departed Parkhead for Nottingham Forest.
In an exclusive interview with Open Goal Sport, Numan recounts asking van Hooijdonk about crossing the sacred divide – only to be firmly put in his place by the towering forward:

Numan would go on to captain Rangers during a trophy-laden five-year spell with the club but when he tells this story, it seems he wasn’t too acquainted with the level of animosity between the two sets of supporters.
