Video: Arthur Numan Admits He Tried to Talk Pierre Van Hooijdonk into Rangers Move

Former Rangers left-back Arthur Numan has admitted he tried to tempt Pierre van Hooijdonk to Ibrox, a few years after the Dutch striker had been a hero to Celtic fans.

The pair knew each other well from the Holland national set-up and Numan has confirmed he was asked by then Gers boss Dick Advocaat to approach his international colleague over a potential return to Glasgow, several years after he’d departed Parkhead for Nottingham Forest.

In an exclusive interview with Open Goal Sport, Numan recounts asking van Hooijdonk about crossing the sacred divide – only to be firmly put in his place by the towering forward:

Numan would go on to captain Rangers during a trophy-laden five-year spell with the club but when he tells this story, it seems he wasn’t too acquainted with the level of animosity between the two sets of supporters.

After his first-ever Old Firm encounter, you can bet your bottom dollar that he knew exactly why van Hooijdonk turned him down.

Can you picture van Hooijdonk in a Rangers shirt? Just imagine the reaction from Celtic fans!
