Brendan Rodgers Describes Celtic Defence as ‘Very Disappointing’ After Zenit Debacle

Celtic were sent crashing out of the Europa League by Zenit Saint Petersburg tonight and Brendan Rodgers has laid the blame squarely on his team’s defence.

After winning 1-0 against the Russians in Glasgow a week ago, Rodgers and his players travelled for the away leg in confident mood but were quickly brought down to Earth after just seven minutes when ex-Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic exploited some shocking defending to head home the opening goal.

Then, after 27 minutes, midfielder Daler Kuzyayev doubled their advantage from long-range after a howler from goalkeeper Dorus de Vries, and Aleksandr Kokorin completed the job by scoring Zenit’s third in the second-half.

The Hoops didn’t have much bite in attack but Rodgers refused to protect his defenders from criticism when questioned by broadcasters BT Sports after the final whistle:

However, whilst he was pretty despondent in his interview, Rodgers backed his side to ‘create more history’ domestically, with a tricky trip to Aberdeen looming at the weekend:
