Jurgen Klopp says Jamie Carragher may be the one who needs to lose some weight, after he appeared to criticise Virgil van Dijk‘s fitness.
Carragher, who made over 500 appearances for Liverpool and won 11 major honours for the club, was on Sky Sports’ The Debate show last night when he analysed van Dijk’s immediate impact at Anfield.
And while the ex-Liverpool defender believes the Dutchman will prove a good signing, he also aimed a dig at van Dijk for being too heavy.
Carragher said, “I think it will prove to be a great signing, but he hasn’t hit the ground running… I think he needs to get fit and lose a bit of weight.”
He added, “He actually looks too big. Maybe that’s to do with not having a pre-season.”
Klopp was asked about Carragher’s comments in this afternoon’s press conference, ahead of this weekend’s clash against Tottenham.
And the German didn’t hold back, implying that Carragher may be the one who has to shed a few pounds… not van Dijk.
The 26-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Southampton at the beginning on the January transfer window, will need to be at his very best to halt Tottenham this weekend.
