The versatile defender has enjoyed a stellar season with Blackburn Rovers – albeit in England’s third tier – and has bagged an impressive 12 goals despite playing most of the campaign in defence.
The 32-year-old will win his 32nd cap in tomorrow evening’s friendly against the World Cup-bound North Americans, meaning he’ll probably be the most experienced outfield player, and new boss Alex McLeish has seen fit to hand him the armband.
A lot of supporters are delighted for the former Celtic man, but whilst Mulgrew hasn’t been given the responsibility on a permanent basis just yet, that hasn’t stopped some fans from voicing their displeasure at the choice:
Step backwards making Mulgrew captain, should be naming a younger player who's gonna be in the team for years to come, Robertson would be my pick

I'm all for Charlie Mulgrew as Scotland captain. More experience than anyone and knows what's needed in every position on the field.

Charlie Mulgrew is the Scotland captain tomorrow? WTF. And folk wonder why we never progress. These guys weren’t good enough to qualify multiple times. Get them out and let the new breed in. Fuck sake.
The dinosaur mentality alive and well in Scotland 🖕🏼

Charlie Mulgrew the new Scotland captain?! Don't get why he's even in the squad. Should be looking to build for the future and have Souttar or Liam Lindsay in there instead.

No complaints about Charlie Mulgrew being Scotland captain against Costa Rica. He is the most capped outfield player and one of a couple of defensive minded players with Champions League experience.
— Michael Wood (@MichaelWood_SJ) March 22, 2018
Charlie Mulgrew is captaining Scotland.
Hopefully from the safety of the hotel room, playing the game on FIFA, whilst wrapped up in a ludicrous amount of bubble wrap. #rovers

What do you think of the news?
Should McLeish have went for someone else? And does Mulgrew have any chance at all of being Scotland’s permanent skipper going forward?
