Scotland aren’t going to the World Cup sadly – so all the build-up to the tournament in Russia which has started with this most recent international break is something we simply have to look on at.
But we can imagine, can’t we? Or dream even?
What if the Tartan Army had managed to make it past Slovenia, Slovakia and Lithuania in the group stages and secured qualification via the play-offs? We’d all be going absolutely bonkers over what squad Gordon Strachan would take this summer.
He’d still be in a job obviously too, rather than Alex McLeish getting his second tenure in charge of the country off to an unconvincing start this week.
But we’re going to ignore all of that and act as if we are going, purely to indulge ourselves.
And this is the 23-man squad we’d pick for the World Cup:
Craig Gordon (Celtic), Allan McGregor (Hull), Jordan Archer (Millwall).
Gordon may be injured at the moment, but, when fit, he’s surely the Scotland number based on his performances for Celtic over the last two seasons? McGregor would be a very able deputy if needed and Archer would get on the plane for the experience. He didn’t get a sniff in what would have been World Cup warm-ups against Costa Rica and Hungary, but he’s only 24 and has the potential to go on and be a Scotland goalkeeper down the line.
