The 21-year-old Manchester United midfielder has been a breath of fresh air since breaking into Jose Mourinho’s starting XI this season and doesn’t look out of place amongst the Premier League’s gaggle of superstars.
McTominay was actually born in Lancaster but is eligible to play for Scotland because of Scottish grandparents, and according to the Times, the youngster agreed to turn out for the Scots after meeting manager Alex McLeish last week.
They might have a whole host of brilliant players to pick from, but there’s some England supporters who are extremely upset with the decision, with some accusing him of lacking ambition and questioning his desire:
Don’t understand the McTominay choice. I know his dads Scottish but 10 caps for England will mean 100 times more than 50 for Scotland does he not want to ever play at a World Cup or Euros? For me shows a complete lack of desire. Taking the easy option. #manutd

McTominay choosing Scotland over England, what a loser, he’s literally from Lancaster and doesn’t back himself to play for England

Talented young Scott McTominay has opted for Scotland. His dad is proudly Scottish and I understand the pull of the blood-line and family loyalty .. but McTominay is ENGLISH .. raised in Lancashire and his dad should have given his lad a career gift by advising: "Go for England"

England aren't blessed with brilliant CM's – The best we have to offer at the moment are Henderson and Wilshere. Not exactly Zidane and Pirlo are they? Southgate actually gives young players a chance like Loftus-Cheek so McTominay would definitely get a look in

To make yesterday even worse, Scott McTominay has committed to Scotland instead of England!!!!!

Yahooo Englishman McTominay agrees to play for Scotland after big Eck goes on his knees to him. Sums up International football. Total farce. The only reason he chose Scotland apart from feeling sorry for Eck is he knew he wud never play for England. 2 weeks ago he was a nobody

Scott McTominay has decided to pledge his international future to Scotland…rightly so no way under England he's gonna get a decent go look!

McTominay reportedly choosing Scotland over England because his grandparents are Scottish??? Seems a little bit unambitious unless there's sentimental reasons

Scott McTominay is bang average. Should’ve been nowhere near England squads if he’d chosen England.

I reckon McTominay has made the best choice for his International career by playing for Scotland instead of England – it’s less pressure for him etc.

As we told you earlier today, Joey Barton is amongst McTominay’s detractors but what do you make of the criticism?
And has he made the right choice by opting for Scotland?
