Gordon Strachan joked about Govan being a tax haven while telling a story about signing Scott Brown at Celtic.

The former Scotland and Hoops manager was one of the guest speakers at Scott Brown’s testimonial dinner on Sunday night, joining Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers on stage.

It was Strachan who signed Brown back in 2007, spending £4million to take the midfielder from Hibs.

And he went on to become a Celtic regular under Strachan before really cementing his place as one of the most valuable players for club and country under Lennon and then Rodgers.

But why did Strachan go for Brown? Well, he joked about Rangers’ interest in him forcing Peter Lawwell to move and how the Hoops were lucky to get him because Govan was a ‘tax haven’ back then:

In case you didn’t make it out, Strachan said: “It was a wonderful signing because I used the magic words to Peter Lawwell: Rangers want to sign him.

“And at that time it was a real panic because, we didn’t know at the time, Govan was a tax haven.”

Strachan is, of course, poking fun at Rangers’ use of EBTs to players in their past – a joke we’re sure he probably wouldn’t have made if he was still in the Scotland job.

He also went on to joke about not being able to sign Kevin Thomson from Hibs so that’s why they went for Brown:

Rodgers had less jokes in his praise of Brown, instead picking out a friendly with Swansea during Lennon’s time as manager as the first time the midfielder made an impact on him:
