The former Celtic star was playing in his first match for the Netherlands since being made his country’s permanent captain but few would’ve given the Dutch much hope, given they’re playing away to European champions Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo.
As has been well documented, Holland are currently going through a serious transitional phase, and won’t be at this summer’s World Cup in Russia, but things don’t look too bad, to be honest.
By half-time, Ronald Koeman’s charges were 3-0 up, with van Dijk’s strike definitely the pick of the goals:

In fairness, it might not be the most spectacular goal ever scored, but there aren’t too many centre-halves capable of pulling off a strike like that, eh?
