Standing in their way is Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals, the team many pundits have tipped to eventually lift the trophy in Lyon.

Therefore there no guarantee that Arsenal will even make the competition’s show-piece, never mind have enough in the tank to dispatch of either Marseille or Red Bull Salzburg.

Rodgers knows he will have Champions League football at Celtic next season, as long as he can navigate through the pesky qualifiers.
