Gigi Buffon‘s career at Champions League level came to a shuddering halt at the Bernabeu tonight, with his last moments in the competition leaving football fans all over the globe absolutely gutted.
With retirement looming in the summer, the legendary 40-year-old keeper was between the sticks as usual for Juventus in their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Having lost the first-leg 3-0 at home, any notion of a comeback seemed laughable before kick-off, but a brace from Mario Mandzukic and a poacher’s finish from Blaise Matuidi levelled the aggregate score at 3-3 – and left Real’s superstars absolutely terrified.
But with the tie seemingly heading to a tense period of extra-time, controversy struck, and Los Blancos were awarded a penalty in injury time – prompting Buffon to completely lose his rag, and angrily confront English referee Michael Oliver.
Buffon was quickly shown a red card, meaning his final moments in the Champions League were in disgrace, and supporters of all different clubs are struggling not to feel sorry for him:
Absolutely heartbroken for Buffon, no wonder he completely lost it, the last piece of his puzzle gone… again

Sending off Buffon is like shooting Bambi. Real got very lucky. Very soft pen. Michael Oliver is good ref but got that wrong. Big big call

First Iniesta, now Buffon. Brutal end for two Champions League titans.

I can’t believe Buffon, at the end of his playing career, has been sent off in a moment of anger against Zidane’s team who was sent off, at the end of his playing career, in a moment of anger against Buffon’s team… #RMAJUV

The Buffon sending off was unnecessary. A booking yes.

Incredible penalty from Ronaldo, nerves of steel. So, so cruel for Juventus and Buffon to go out like that. No one gave them half a chance but what a game they made it. And breathe

you’re gonna get your karma for disrespecting buffon like this. fuck this

Buffon is still a legend though! Anyone would have reacted the same way. Sad to see him get sent off that way in his last champions league game.

I feel sick for Buffon. What a disastrous way to likely end his European career.

You can not hate Buffon, Shame how that match ended. Gutted for Juve and Buffon

The English Referee Michael Oliver is one of the most useless person to officiate a football game in the world of football… why give a red card to Juventus Captain Buffon for questioning your poor decision of awarding Ronaldo and Real Madrid a penalty. Fucking CUNT!
— Atanas (@atanasi_) April 11, 2018
As you’d expect, Ronaldo coolly slotted away the resulting spot-kick, but do you feel sorry for Buffon?
Did he really deserve to be sent off?
What do you think?
