The Scottish centre-back sprung a surprise today by putting pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with the Bundesliga club, and will join up with his new employers once his contract at Ibrox runs out in the summer.
The 21-year-old has only really cemented himself as a Gers first-team regular this season, and along with Ross McCrorie, Bates embodied a potential future partnership at the heart of the club’s defence.

But it appears Rangers have been outbid by their German counterparts, and chief scout Johannes Spors has explained exactly what prompted the shock move.
Speaking via the Hamburg official website, he said: “David brings a mixture of size, speed, mentality and responsibility which is key at the back and will do HSV the world of good.
“He’s a down-to-earth guy who wants to develop and will work hard to do so.”
How big a blow is Bates’ departure to Rangers, and how do you think he’ll fare plying his trade in German football?
Is it refreshing to see a young, Scottish player trying his luck abroad?
