Manchester City were eliminated from the Champions League this evening and just about every non-City fan in the country is sticking the boot into Pep Guardiola.
After losing 3-0 to Liverpool in the first-leg of the Champions League quarter-final last week, a comeback seemed unlikely, but given City are one of the most expensive teams ever assembled, if anybody could do it it was them, right?
Well, when Gabriel Jesus scored after just two minutes, it looked doable, but second-half goals from Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino ensured Jurgen Klopp’s side a safe passage into the last-four.
The result means Pep hasn’t won the Champions League in three attempts with Bayern Munich and two with City, and even his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini managed to reach the semi-finals in his last season at the Etihad.
They’ll win the Premier League, but tonight will be a sore one for Pep and City to take:
Interesting. No UCL Final for Pep in last 7 years, having managed Barca, Bayern & Man City!

Think it's fair to say now that Pep has failed to win the CL with both @FCBayernEN and the most expensive team ever assembled but sure he's still the saviour of football like #MCILIV #UCL

Pep has spent over £500m at City and reached the same stage of the champions league as Leicester did last season loooool

Pep learning things are different with the officials when you're not at Barca or Bayern

Pep the fraud and Barca getting eliminated from CL is a Madrid fans dream

So you’re telling me Pep spent 488m in 18 months and can’t get past this Liverpool side? pic.twitter.com/A4gDSmERMz

If @ManCity only make last 8 Champions League and @BurnleyOfficial get into Europe then we all know who Manager of the Year should be. And it’s not Pep.

Jose ended Pep Fraudiola. Best manager in the world. No debate.

Pep spent 300 million on that defence. pic.twitter.com/v1Jv3y8S83

Wonder if pep found a seat😬

Pep is arguably the best manager in the world yet he still manages to be a fraud. Self-proclaimed football 'hipsters' and 'experts' are crying that he's got tactics wrong in both legs and it's cost him

Pep hasn't done anything meaningful in the Champions League for years now

Tbh Pep lost City this game

Does he really deserve all of the criticism he’s taking? What do you think?
