Video: Is Douglas Costa to Blame For Gianluigi Buffon’s Red Card?

Douglas Costa may have some explaining to do when you assess who was really to blame for Gianluigi Buffon‘s late red card against Real Madrid.

The Brazilian winger was among the players furious with referee Michael Oliver after his decision to award Madrid an injury time penalty with the score level at 3-3 on aggregate.

Juve had went into the game 3-0 down from the first leg in Italy, but turned the tie on its head by leading 3-0 going into injury time.

Then Vasquez went down under the challenge of Mehdi Benatia and Oliver pointed to the spot – leading to raging protests from the Juve players, including Buffon.

The English referee deemed Buffon’s actions as a red card offence and wasted no time sending the legendary Italian keeper off on what is likely to be his final Champions League appearance.

But should it have been Buffon sent off? Or was it Costa who pushed Oliver? This footage shows the latter is the case:

Ronaldo went on to score past substitute goalie Wojciech Szczesny, but would it have been different had Buffon been in goal?

Sadly, that doesn’t matter now as Oliver punished Buffon and Ronaldo went on to score to settle the tie 4-3 to Madrid on aggregate.
