Riley McGree might not be a name you’ve heard before, but we fully expect you to become very familiar with it after the Newcastle Jets midfielder scored what must be the best goal of 2018.
McGree’s strike has already been compared to the scorpion kicks scored by Premier League duo Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Olivier Giroud, with the latter’s goal against Crystal Palace winning the 2017 Puskas Award.
And we fully expect this magical finish from McGree to follow down the same path.
The 19-year-old popped up on the edge of Melbourne City’s box and rather than trying to find a way through the opposition defence, showed pure imagination with a stunning scorpion kick of his own.
Warning, you may need to watch this a few times to wrap your head around how bloody good it is:
😲 "OH MY GOODNESS! OH MY GOODNESS!" 😲
Stunning scorpion kick while on the run by Riley McGree!!!
One of the most amazing goals you will EVER, EVER see 🔥 pic.twitter.com/stUKyi2Cs3

Despite the teenager’s goal rightfully earning bags of immediate praise from the A-League commentary team, McGree’s manager Ernie Merrick remains rooted to the teams bench and looks thoroughly unimpressed.
We imagine Merrick’s mood changed somewhat at full-time though, as the Jets managed to build on McGree’s brilliant equaliser and score a second goal to secure their spot in the A-League final.
