Dedryck Boyata Wants Vincent Kompany Fit for the World Cup… Even if it Limits His Game Time

Dedryck Boyata is desperate for Vincent Kompany to recover from an injury scare in time for this summer’s World Cup… even if it wrecks his chances of playing a bigger role for Belgium in Russia.

Kompany went down with a suspected groin injury during last night’s 0-0 draw with Portugal and Celtic defender Boyata was immediately brought on as a replacement.

Manchester City skipper Kompany has been blighted with injury problems in recent seasons and with back-up Thomas Vermaelen also struggling with a hamstring problem, Boyata could be on the verge of becoming a crucial player for Roberto Martinez.

However, instead of relishing the opportunity to stand in for his fallen countrymen, Boyata would rather see Belgium at full strength for the tournament.

The 27-year-old, fresh after securing the double-treble with Celtic last season, told reporter he doesn’t want to “rely on injuries to get to Russia.”

Boyata said, “I really hope Vincent is all right and will be fit for the World Cup .

“I didn’t know about the injury because I was just concentrating on preparing to go on as a sub.”

He added, “I’m happy enough with my own performance although there are always aspects of my game I can improve on.

“Thomas Vermaelen has been injured too, but he and Vincent are mainstays of the team and we need them there.

“My goal is to be in the 23. I have fought to be in this squad.

“This is my first full season without injuries for years. So if I haven’t made it, I will have no regrets. I’ve given my all.”

Reports suggest that Kompany will undergo a scan to assess the extent of his injury later this afternoon.
