Jamie Carragher’s honest message to the England national team ahead of the World Cup should give supporters hope.
The former Liverpool defender played 38 times for the Three Lions during his career, including appearances at two World Cups.
But the latest of those major tournament appearances won’t give Carragher fond memories – as England scraped into the last 16 before being beaten 4-1 by Germany and dumped out of the competition.
Nothing about the tournament was too positive for England and Carragher believes the poor performances of that competition give the current crop of players plenty of opportunity to improve.
So supporters should be reassured about their chances:

England kick off their World Cup campaign against Tunisia in Volgograd on Monday night and Gareth Southgate’s men will be expecting to get a win to set them up nicely in their group alongside Panama and Belgium.
But will they do much better than finishing in the last 16? That remains to be seen.
