Sam Matterface’s ‘Hand of Cod’ Commentary Line Splits Twitter

Sam Matterface gave birth to the ‘Hand of Cod’ after Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Thór Halldórsson’s penalty save against Lionel Messi.

The ITV pundit called Argentina against Iceland in their World Cup Group D opener and it was an eventful game.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero scored a beautiful goal early on to make it 1-0 before Iceland hit back through Alfred Finbogason – the first goal the country has ever scored at the tournament.

And Argentina had the opportunity to get back in front in the second half when Szymon Marciniak pointed to the spot after Hordur Magnusson brought down Aguero.

But Messi’s spotkick was saved by Halldórsson and that gave birth to Matterface’s ‘Hand of Cod’ line.

That’s got a split reaction on Twitter:

We’re actually a fan of that line – and we’d be shocked if it didn’t appear on some newspapers tomorrow morning as they react to Iceland getting a famous result.

Both teams will be back in action later next week when they play games against Nigeria and Croatia.
