Samuel Umtiti has poked fun at himself after his inexplicable handball against Australia today.
The French defender had a moment of madness in his country’s opening World Cup game earlier when he handled the ball and gave the Aussies an immediate opportunity to cancel out Antoine Griezmann’s goal.
Australia took that opportunity, with Mile Jedinak firing beyond Hugo Lloris to level the score at 1-1.
And Umtiti must have been seriously worried for the remainder of the game as France tried and, largely, failed to break down Bert van Marwijk’s side.
Luckily for Umtiti, Paul Pogba’s goal got him out of jail to seal a 2-1 win – and that allowed him to see the funny side of it after the game.
He posted to Instagram:
Fair play, Umtiti.

Fair play to him for taking it in good fun – but we’re not so sure he would have been posting that had France failed to win.
Didier Deschamps’ men are next in action against Peru on Thursday and they’ll be expecting to play a lot better than they did today.
