The weekend coming is certainly back at the box office with a bang for boxing and Matchroom with massive heavyweight action all over it but, whilst I have been away and vacationing, there seems to have been some fairly hefty things going on…
Saturday the 7th of July, the ordinary WBA cruiserweight belt was the subject of a title fight in Kazakhstan when Beibut Shumenov saw off challenger Hizni Altunkaya when Altunkaya, having been down in the 1st round, retired in the 9th.
On Friday the 13th of July in York Hall the welterweight clash between Scotland’s John Thain and Larry Ekundayo ended with Ekundayo winning on points whilst middleweight Harley Benn got another 4 round win on points in the bag.
The following night, Saturday the 14th of July saw, in Offenburg, Germany, the WBA middleweight mantle of the world title leave the waist of Tyron Zeuge and end up around Rocky Fielding. Fielding was absolutely fantastic and whilst we may wonder at Zeuge’s lack of fight beyond the second round, nothing takes away from the performance of the latest World Champion from these shores.
Then on Sunday the 15th of July in Kuala Lumpur the WBA welterweight clash between Lucas Matthysse and Manny Pacquiao answered so many questions as Pacquiao stopped him and stopped thoughts of retirement at the same time – this was Pacquiao back to performing on a world stage.
