The SPFL is Bringing Back Reserve Leagues…But the Idea Receives a Mixed Reaction From Fans

The SPFL have announced reserve leagues are coming back for the forthcoming domestic season – but the news has been greeted with a lukewarm reaction from Scottish football followers.

According to a statement released on their website, the SPFL have revealed two reserve leagues comprising of 27 clubs will operate in the 2018/19 campaign, and this replaces the development leagues that have been in place since 2009.

The top tier of the new divisions will have 18 clubs, who will play each other once in a 17-game season, with fixtures taking place on a Monday afternoon.

Reserve League 2 is made up of nine clubs, who will play each other once at home and once away for a total of 16 matches and these fixtures will generally take place on midweek evenings.

No age restrictions will apply to the leagues, other than players being at least 16-years-old.

Whilst plenty of fans seem generally happy to see the reserve leagues back, there’s a few alterations they’d like to see made, such as fixtures being played on a Monday afternoon.

Not only that, does that mean the development leagues will now go down as a failure?

What do you think of the news? Are you behind it?
