Wayne Rooney opened his MLS account in style on Saturday night – but his good mood was soon trashed after his nose was accidentally broken in a gruesome collision.
The former Manchester United striker scored his first goal in DC United colours in the 2-1 win over Colorado Rapids, and even managed to nutmeg his former United team-mate Tim Howard in the process.

But as Rooney and his team-mates aggressively tried to stop a late onslaught from Colorado, Rooney was sent flying face down onto the turf, following an accidental clash of heads, and his nose was left pouring with blood, although you wouldn’t have known it judging by the emotionless look on his face.

The DC United medical team confirmed after full-time that Rooney’s nose was indeed broken, but it remains to be seen if the England striker misses much of the American season, with his side currently languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
