John McGinn becoming a Celtic player this summer looks very likely after Hibs left him out of their Europa League clash with NSI Runavik last night.
The Scottish international is fit and was involved in Paul Hanlon’s testimonial against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend.
But the Hoops have bid for him a second time since then – an offer which was reportedly rejected by the Easter Road outfit.
And it looks like McGinn’s omission last night could be in an effort from Hibs to protect their star asset – who has a slight injury issue – ahead of what is a likely move to Celtic.
So with the Scottish champions primed to big again for McGinn, what should Leeann Dempster and Hibs be demanding from them to sell?
Here are some options:
1 – £4million
This is the figure that’s been mentioned most in reports, with Hibs looking to get a big fee for someone they’ve developed a lot since leaving St Mirren back in 2015. When Celtic signed Scott Brown 11 years ago, they got £4.4m for him and given the comparisons between the two players, you can understand the Hibees wanting to get a similar price for someone dubbed ‘the next Brown’. Of all the options, this would surely be the preferred one.
2 – Money plus Scott Allan
Allan has been a big hit at Hibs during two spells at the club and it looks likely he has no Celtic future, despite being involved in their early pre-season games. Hibs need more midfield options, particularly with the potential loss of McGinn, and Allan is someone Lennon rates, trusts and is available. Perhaps Celtic spending around £3m and offering Allan as well could work?
3 – Money plus Scott Allan and another player
Let’s say Allan is definitely going to be part of the deal, would Celtic spend as much as £3m alongside him? McGinn’s going into the final year of his contract at Easter Road and that will impact his value, at least in the mind of Peter Lawwell and the Hoops. So, maybe they’ll reduce the price and offer another player – most likely on loan – for McGinn? Talented youngsters like Tony Ralston and Mikey Johnston could be available while fringe stars like Ryan Christie and Kouassi Eboue may get some game time out on loan this season.
Hibs fans – what do you want for McGinn?
