Brendan Rodgers Denies Claim He Told Moussa Dembele Brighton Were Better Club Than Celtic

Brendan Rodgers has denied the claim he told Moussa Dembele that Brighton were a better club than Celtic.

The Hoops manager has had an eventful 24 hours between dealing with the French striker’s future and his side reaching the Europa League group stages with a 3-0 win over Suduva last night.

Interest in Dembele from a number of clubs has been reported on all week, but it was confirmed yesterday that the Scottish champions had knocked back bids from Lyon for him.

He wasn’t in the squad for last night’s victory at Celtic Park – following up his missed training session on Wednesday.

But Rodgers said last night that he was ‘confident’ Dembele would stay beyond today’s transfer deadline – a belief that led the Celtic striker to have a dig at his manager on Twitter later on.

Since then, Dembele has tweeted again and even liked a number of tweets about how Rodgers went back on his word to sell the Frenchman when the time was right.

And, perhaps most controversially, he liked a tweet from a French football news source that claimed Rodgers told him back in January that Brighton were a better club than Celtic.

At that time, Dembele was reportedly interesting the English Premier League club, but the claim is a controversial one considering Rodgers’ position at the Hoops.

Dembele only took part in some of Celtic’s training session today before being told to leave by Rodgers.

And when speaking to the media ahead of his side’s clash with Rangers on Sunday, the Northern Irishman denied the claim about Brighton.

Per numerous sources at the press conference:

Rodgers also confirmed that Dembele is ‘highly unlikely’ to play against Rangers on Sunday.

And it casts serious doubts over his future today, with the Hoops possibly thinking about cashing in on him while they still have the opportunity.
