Celtic are fighting to keep their Champions League dream alive after being held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to AEK Athens – and the majority of the club’s supporters are pointing the finger at young defender Kristoffer Ajer.
The 20-year-old Norwegian centre-back was once again paired alongside 23-year-old Jack Hendry tonight, under the Celtic Park floodlights, as Brendan Rodgers’ men looked to secure a first-leg advantage ahead of next week’s return match in Greece.
When Callum McGregor riffled in the opening goal after just 17 minutes, it looked like the Hoops were well on their way to victory, but Viktor Klonaridis levelled things up just before half-time following a desperate bit of defending from Ajer.
Having conceded a priceless away goal, Celtic are now the underdogs to qualify for the playoff round, and it seems Ajer is Public Enemy No.1 on social media tonight:
Ajer has been absolutely woeful the night

Ajer rotten tonight.

I love big Ajer but by Christ he's been chronic tonight

Ajer and Hendry doing their bit to convince the board we need new centre halves

Ajer will be delighted to see that guy being subbed off. He’s been ran ragged by him all night

Absolutely horrendous defending by Kristoffer Ajer. Now we need to do exactly what we did against Rosenborg.

Any chance Ajer would stop diving into tackles, giving away fouls and ending up on his arse?

Ajer and Hendry shouldn’t be playing together way too young and inexperienced

Ajer, Ajer, Ajer… No comment. When will the board take heed and buy? Players are good for the league, but not for Europe. Same story every year. @CelticGossip

Hendry not good enough.
Ajer not experienced enough.

Ajer and Hendry all over the place there. Horrendous defending

Ajer is nowhere near it, Lads

Ntcham was excellent.
Ajer was atrocious.

After picking up a yellow card this evening, Ajer will miss next week’s second-leg – but what do you think of the reaction to his performance tonight?
