With the “summer” month of August trying its best to confuse us with weather that is all over the pace, tonight Saturday the 4th of August in Cardiff Matchroom presents their own future plans with another NEXTGEN show with plenty to get excited about.
We have the return of lightweight Scott Cardle taking on Michael Mooney and the expectation is that Cardle will use this as an opportunity to get the ring rust off and get ready for an assault again on the British title that he covets so much.
Super bantamweight Gamal Yafai is on the bill and will return against the tough journeyman Jose Aguilar. There is no doubt that Aguilar shall be aware of why he is there and Yafai will return another win.
The welterweight clash between the exciting Daniyar Yeleussinov and Gabor Gorbics needs fireworks to convince as Yeleussinov looked less than impressive last time out.
The WBA international title fight between Natasha Jonas and Viviane Obenauf at super featherweight is no walkover and Jonas may be pushed in the right way tonight though expectations are high as she moves toward a possible showdown with Katie Taylor.
The headline of the night is the lightweight Commonwealth fight between Joe Cordina and Sean Masher Dodds. There is no doubt that headlining at home is a huge pressure. Cordina has handled everything thrown at him and this ought to be no different. I expect Dodds to turn up and try to make sure his career is not sacrificed on the altar of Cordina’s career but ultimately Cordina will prevail… I think…
In Atlantic City meanwhile, there are two light heavyweight title fights between Sergey Kovalev and Eleider Alvarez for the WBO title and Dmitry Bivol and Isaac Chilemba for the WBA crown. A Kovalev/ Bivol double is expected and to be fair I cannot argue with that!
