Brendan Rodgers gave a significant update on Celtic‘s recruitment at this stage of the summer transfer window – and it may come with some worry for supporters.
The Hoops manager spoke to the media this afternoon ahead of his side’s Champions League third round qualifying first leg clash with AEK Athens tomorrow night.
And he told how the club had knocked a bid back from Fulham for defender Dedryck Boyata.
Rodgers also said that John McGinn was still a player of interest – surprising considering the Celtic gaffer usually refuses to discuss transfer targets in public before they’re at the club.
You have to wonder if he was sending a message to Celtic’s board with these comments about McGinn.
Asked if the deal for the Hibs man was over after news broke he’d travelled to Birmingham to discuss a deal with Aston Villa, Rodgers, per stv.tv, said: “No, it’s not. He’s a player we clearly wanted to bring here, he’s a player from a few months back I was really interested in bringing in.
“But we haven’t been able to complete a deal and when you don’t complete a deal for a player it opens the door for other teams.
“Aston Villa are clearly interested in him and have a big history of their own, a great club with excellent facilities and now financial backing. So we have to wait and see on him.”
Then when you read Rodgers’ take on the club replacing players they’ve lost in the summer, it suggests the manager is frustrated with the lack of transfer activity.
He said: “We don’t want to wait. We need to keep improving and that means signing quality.
“It was important we kept ahold of players like Tom Rogic, but running alongside that is strengthening with quality. That is something we need to do and I hope we can do. You need to strengthen when in a good moment.
“Over the last couple of years we’ve lost players and the bare minimum you need is to replace that.
“We’ve lost Stuart Armstrong and haven’t got a replacement yet, Patrick Roberts has gone out and we haven’t got a replacement yet. These are areas we need to complete deals on and get that support into the team.”
Celtic have only signed Odsonne Edouard this summer, while Lewis Morgan joined the club properly after spending the second half of last season back on loan at St Mirren.
Are those comments that should worry Celtic fans?
