Football Manager is set to return with a whole host of new features which are set to drive you up the wall as you aim to climb to the top of the managerial tree – including the introduction of VAR.
The world’s most popular management simulation video game will soon be hitting stores all across the globe, and one thing makers Sports Interactive and Sega can’t be accused of is simply relying on old, existing features already embedded into the FM universe.
The 2019 edition has been overhauled in two core areas of the game, with training and tactics receiving significant attention this season with the training module tweaked significantly, and the tactics creator upgraded to reflect innovations in modern football.
But the most eye-catching development is the introduction of VAR, following its use at last summer’s World Cup in Russia.
There are two types of VAR in FM2019 – one where the referee uses a TV screen by the side of the pitch to assess the original decision and one where the referee communicates with the Video Assistant Referees via an earpiece. The type of VAR you see on your screen when playing is dependent on how it is utilised in the real-life competition.
Moreover, Goal-line technology is shown in the form of a replay from a top-down perspective that indicates whether the ball did or did not cross the line, along with commentary confirming this.
In post-match press conferences, you’ll be asked about instances where either technology was used during the match, and controversial incidents will be referenced in match reports and across social media.
Personally, we have absolutely no idea if the new virtual VAR is going to make or break your gaming experience, but the Football Manager franchise can certainly never be accused of resting on its laurels.
Football Manager 2019 will be in stores from November 2. What do you make of the update?
