The Manchester United legend is currently playing for DC United in MLS, and has been winning plaudits for his performances State side, which has led to the 33-year-old winning his 120th international cap.
Rooney retired from international duty in 2017 but he will lead out England one more time in a ceremonial way at the National Stadium, with proceeds from the glamour fixture being donated to charity.
He’s England’s all-time top-scorer, and probably took more stick than most during his international career, but there’s still a lot of fans who think this is a marketing stunt that cheapens international caps:
Wayne Rooney can fuck right off. This is a fucking embarrassment

All because can't sell tickets! Prefer see Sancho playing tbh. But be nice to see Wayne back in an England shirt.

Embarrassing! The game has gone. For all the hard work Rooney has put in over his career, giving out pity caps is just a money making exercise. I'm surprised he accepted it.

Does Rooney take someone else's place in the next England squad? like atm @CallumWilson deserves a call up imo, fair play if there is the usual amount and he's an extra player in the squad though but if he is taking someone else's place it seems unfair

Caps are now a marketing thing?

After all the positives the World Cup brought for the @England this just completely devalues International football again and undos all the good work. Let @WayneRooney organise a charity match somewhere if you're that bothered.

Shambles, publicity stunt like this, wouldn’t have expected Southgate to give this the nod

Why? If its a marketing ploy to get US 🇺🇸 fans interested…why stop with Rooney, bring Beckham back as well while you're at it.. It's a joke.

I’m more disgusted at this than Gray getting booked for taking his top off yesterday.

OH FUCK OFF. When Southgate came in we needed a blank page, getting rid of Rooney was the first thing. Fucking bottled it Southgate, clearly someone has told him to recall him.

What do you think of the situation? Does Rooney deserve a send-off like this?
