Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi Reveals He Almost Signed for Celtic as a Teenager

Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi has revealed he came close to signing for Celtic, amongst other clubs, when he was a promising teenager, only to end up joining the Gunners.

The 22-year-old was earmarked as a potential Arsenal star for several years before his senior debut under Arsene Wenger back in 2015, and he’s enjoying a pretty impressive season under Unai Emery.

Iwobi has cemented his spot as a first-team regular at the Emirates but things could’ve been very different had the Nigeria international plumped for one of his other options.

Speaking in the Arsenal match-day programme ahead of Saturday’s Premier League win over Huddersfield, Iwobi explained, via the Sun: “My situation was weird.

“There was three of us at the time and we were basically told ‘stay if you want, or if not you are free to go.’

“It was up to me and at that moment I went to the Crystal Palace training ground to see them.

“I had offers from Celtic and Southampton as well.

“Celtic was the main one but I wasn’t ready to go to Scotland. I thought it was best to stay at Arsenal but I have to say it felt weird.

“I was playing for England but I felt maybe I wasn’t rated.

He might not be one of the greatest players in Europe yet, but surely signing Iwobi would have been a bit of a coup for Celtic, no?

What do you think of his comments, and how would Iwobi have fared in Scottish football?
