5 Efe Ambrose Replacements For Hibs This January

5 Efe Ambrose Replacements For Hibs This January

Efe Ambrose has departed Hibs after invoking a contract clause that allows him to in January.

The Nigerian defender has been at Easter Road since joining them on loan in 2017.

That loan move was made permanent shortly after and he went on to make a total of 168 appearances under Neil Lennon.

But his time in Edinburgh is up – and now Lennon is left with the big task of replacing his star centre back.

Here, we give you five replacements for Ambrose this January:

Craig Halkett – Buy

Halkett must be seen as one of the most appealing options this January for many teams. He’s got a Livingston deal until the end of the season so is in a position to sign a pre-contract for other sides. That must surely interest Lennon? The Hibs manager will no doubt be looking for an immediate replacement for Ambrose so could test Livi’s resolve with a bid this January. Livi may then see some appeal in getting some money for their captain rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

Tom Aldred – Buy

Ask a Motherwell fan who their Player of the Year is and they’ll no doubt say Aldred’s name. He returned to Fir Park in the summer on a season-long loan after spending the second half of last season there. And he’s kicked on to another level in this campaign. Motherwell fans certainly won’t want to lose him, but it’s inevitable he’ll attract interest from elsewhere given he’s out of the picture at Bury. If it’s possible for Aldred to be recalled from his loan at Motherwell then Hibs could see him as an interesting option as a permanent replacement for Ambrose.

Jack Hendry – Loan

It’s clear Hendry will have to move away from Celtic in January to get the game time he needs. The former Dundee defender has played sporadically for the Hoops since signing for them last summer. But he’s not played under Brendan Rodgers since the end of October and now reports say he’ll be sent out on loan. Step forward Hibs. There’s no doubt Hendry has quality and regular first team games could help him show that before returning to Celtic and fighting for a place.

Steven Caulker – Free

This is a bold shout considering Caulker hasn’t kicked a ball since leaving Dundee under a cloud of mystery in September. The centre back decided to walk out on his Dens Park contract after triggering a release clause and his then manager Neil McCann said it was to pursue another challenge. Whatever Caulker had in mind, it hasn’t materialised yet – so maybe a return to Scotland could appeal? Lennon is a fan of big, powerful defenders and could be the man to get the best out of Caulker.

Robert Huth – Free

This is an even bolder shout than Caulker – but Huth definitely has the experience and quality to replace someone like Ambrose. Most significantly, he is available too after leaving Leicester at the end of last season. It’s unclear whether or not Huth sees himself as a player anymore as there are few reports on who could be his next club while he dips his toe in the punditry waters. But if he does want to continue playing then Scotland could be an appealing option. As a former Foxes player, Lennon should be well aware of Huth after the defender’s three years there.
