The ex-England international has put pen-to-paper on a loan deal to remain in Glasgow for the next 18-months, and will meet up with the Ibrox club’s squad at their Tenerife training camp tomorrow.
After announcing the news, Gerrard and the club’s Director of Football Mark Allen were quoted exclaiming just how pleased they are to get things over the line, with a public thank you to his parent club perhaps hinting at the slice of Defoe’s lucrative weekly wage that will be picked up.
Speaking via the official Rangers website, Gerrard said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome Jermain to Rangers. He is an exceptionally talented striker and vastly experienced footballer who has scored goals at every club he has played for.

“He will be a great addition to our dressing room and we look forward to integrating him into the squad whilst we work in Tenerife over the next week.”
Whilst Allen added: “It’s really helpful to get work on this front done early in the transfer window because it means we should be able to hit the ground running after the winter break.
“I believe that is vitally important.”
Defoe could make his competitive debut as a Rangers player when Scotland’s winter break comes to a close later this month, with minnows Cowdenbeath awaiting in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
What do you think of Defoe’s arrival? Will he score goals for fun in Scottish football?
