The new Rangers striker revealed earlier this week that he knocked back the chance to join the Selhurst Park club before deciding to sign on at Ibrox.
He moved north on an 18-month loan deal from Bournemouth and has immediately flown out to Tenerife to join Rangers’ winter training camp this week.
Beating English Premier League side Palace to a signing is a coup for Rangers, but Hodgson has today denied their side’s interest in the former England striker.
Speaking at a press conference today ahead of Palace’s clash with Watford tomorrow, Hodgson, per skysports.com, said: “That’s not true. We had no interest. I saw his name mentioned in relation to the club. But it’s one thing people relating their players to our club, and another thing our club initiating moves to sign a player.
“I can state categorically we made no move at all to sign Jermain Defoe. I like Defoe – I’ve worked with him and think he’s a good player. I’m pleased he’s gone to Rangers but we were never one of the candidates for his signature.”
So – who to believe?
Regardless, Defoe is a Rangers player and will be part of their pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title this season.
His first game could be against Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Cup a week today.
