Why Oliver Burke is a Signing Celtic Fans Should Be More Excited About

Oliver Burke is a Celtic player after a loan deal until the end of the season was agreed between the club and West Brom.

Hoops fans are expecting a lot of activity in January and signing someone already should be seen as a positive.

But the reaction to Burke’s signing has been mixed, with many commenting on how it’s just another winger in the ranks and someone they’ll have to hand back in the summer anyway.

All that may be true, but that doesn’t mean Burke can’t have a big impact for Celtic.

And here’s why some fans should be more excited about his signing:

He’s Like James Forrest

Celtic have been very reliant on Forrest in the first half of the season, but Burke’s arrival should allow Rodgers to change it up at right wing. Arguably Burke is faster than the long-time Celtic man and it means the Hoops retain a lot of pace in the final third if the former replaces the latter in games. An alternative to Forrest has been missing and Burke’s arrival sorts that out quickly.

At 21, Burke already has five caps for Scotland since making his debut in 2016. Sure, he’s not kicked on for the national team in the way many would have liked, but Burke is a player of calibre and his early call-up to the Tartan Army senior squad proves this.

That is a lot of money – and RB Leipzig definitely have previous for spending top dollar on quality players. So their rating of him suggests there is a lot of talent in there. It’s just up to Rodgers and Celtic now to get it out of him.

Darren Fletcher said of Burke: “It’s very rare for a Scottish player, that sort of athlete with power and pace and really good technique to go with it.

“He’s got to out there and enjoy his football and go and express himself.”

Dougie Freedman said: “He has the ability to face up a man and Glasgow Celtic have loved these players right through their history, a guy who can drop the shoulder, go by on the outside and deliver crosses.”

His former RB Leipzig coach, and now Southampton boss, Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “Oliver Burke gets better and better,” Hasenhuttl told reporters ahead of Leipzig’s match at Darmstadt on Saturday.

“He’s a fast learner and will be an option in the No. 10 position at some point. We signed him for that.”

Celtic fans – do you see Burke making a big impact?
