Declan Rice Confirms He’s Turning His Back on Ireland to Play For England

Declan Rice has confirmed his intention to turn his back on the Republic of Ireland and turn out for England, in a massive blow to Mick McCarthy.

Rice, 20, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most outstanding young players this season after a string of commanding displays for West Ham in their defensive midfield position.

Irish fans have been pinning their hopes on Rice being a mainstay of their team for the next decade, despite England being his birthplace.

Rice qualified to play for the Republic as his grandparents were from Cork, and he already has three senior caps under previous boss Martin O’Neill, but he has never actually played for Ireland in a competitive match:

England are due to play their opening Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro next month, and it looks pretty likely that Rice will be included in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

But what do you make of his decision?
