Connor Goldson has raved about the 4-4-2 diamond formation that Rangers played in their 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock last month.
The English centre back wasn’t actually involved in that game as he continued his recovery from an injury.
But he watched on that night at Rugby Park after also watching a week of training in the build up to the game.
Rangers lost that game 2-1 – and Gerrard’s decision to move from his usual 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 diamond so he could accommodate Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe was blamed for the defeat.
Goldson, however, was very impressed with the diamond in the build up to that game and it even showed in the first 20 minutes of that game against Killie:
Gerrard has reverted to the 4-3-3 he’s used regularly in the games since, but the diamond may still be something he uses with both Morelos and Defoe in his squad.
Take tonight for example. Kilmarnock are the opponents again – with the teams going head to head at Ibrox in a replay of their Scottish Cup fifth round tie.
Both Morelos and Defoe are fit and available so Gerrard may decide to go with both in his starting XI, with a diamond the preferred formation.
