VAR has been used to overturn a goal for the first time in the history of the Champions League tonight, and it’s safe to say fans all over the continent are pretty unhappy with the ruling.
The Video Assistant Referee wasn’t in use in the competition’s group stages but it’s been introduced for the knockout rounds, and Real Madrid found themselves the beneficiaries in their last-16 tie against Ajax in Amsterdam.
It looked like the Dutch giants had gone ahead midway through the first-half, when Real goalie Thibaut Courtois dropped a howler, but Dusan Tadic was adjudged to be in an offside position as the ball flew into the back of the net, and the referee quickly changed his decision – much to the annoyance of fans all over Europe:
What do you think of the decision, and do you think VAR should become a mainstay in top-flight European football?
