The Red Devils will go up against the Ligue 1 champions later knowing they must score at least two goals to have any chance of going through to the last eight.
That’s a result of their poor 2-0 defeat to PSG at Old Trafford three weeks ago.
The task has been made tougher for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team as they’ll be without a number of key players – including the hugely influential Pogba, who is suspended.
But who could step up in his place tonight? Here, we give you three contenders:
FredEmbed from Getty Images
Considering Fred cost United £52million in a move from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer, he really should be playing for the team. Such is the quality of the United squad that he’s found regular game time hard to come by this season, but he’s a very intriguing option for them tonight given the injuries and suspension in midfield. United will need a creative spark in midfield tonight to get the goals they need and the Brazilian is likely to be tasked with providing that alongside the front three. A huge night for him.
Andreas PereiraEmbed from Getty Images
Pereira may be one Solskjaer trusts more as he’s regularly played since the Norwegian arrived back at the club – whether it’s been from the start or off the bench. There’s more subtlety to Pereira’s creativity as he’s a passer who is capable of making key assists from deep positions – a little different to the power and pace of Pogba. He does offer more from dead balls than the Frenchman, though, and that could come in handy tonight.
James GarnerEmbed from Getty Images
Garner is an unknown quantity to many considering he’s played just once for United – and that was a very late cameo in their recent win over Crystal Palace. But what does Solskjaer have to lose throwing the youngster is? Upon research, Garner is highly rated at United and seen as a player in the mould of Michael Carrick. What United would give for a player like Carrick in their team – particularly with Pogba out. We’re expecting a surprise in the United team and Garner could be that.
What would be your starting XI?
