Benkovic Reveals He’s Close to Fitness Ahead of Rangers Showdown

Filip Benkovic has revealed he’s closing in on a return to the Celtic first-team – ahead of this month’s crucial showdown with Rangers.

The Croatian centre-back has been on-loan at Parkhead for the season from Leicester City and cemented his place as one of the Hoops’ most important players under Brendan Rodgers.

However, Benkovic has played only once since Celtic’s last meeting with Rangers at Ibrox on December 29, and it looked uncertain whether or not he’d play again this season.

But with Steven Gerrard’s men visiting the East End of Glasgow on March 31, Benkovic is eyeing a return to the first-team, and a first start under Neil Lennon.

Speaking via Football Scotland, the 21-year-old explained: “My situation? The injury is almost behind me.

“I want to play as many games as possible by the end of the season.”

Benkovic has made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals in the process.

But there is no chance of him staying beyond the summer, with Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers confirming he will return to the Foxes for a stint in next season’s Premier League.

How important could Benkovic be during Celtic’s run-in?
