Gareth Southgate Says He Won’t Cap Angus Gunn Just to Keep Him From Scotland

England manager Gareth Southgate has insisted he won’t cap players like Angus Gunn in order to keep from playing for other countries like Scotland.

The Southampton goalkeeper has been at the centre of speculation this week after long-term Scotland No.1 Allan McGregor decided to retire from international football, leaving a crucial spot open in Alex McLeish’s side.

Gunn has been in outstanding form in the Premier League this season, and has already represented England at Under-21 level, but qualifies for Scotland due to his dad, Bryan.

England had the chance to call Gunn up earlier today for the Euro2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro, but Southgate instead decided to continue with Jordan Pickford, Tom Heaton and Jack Butland – even though he’s been playing in the Championship this season.

When asked about players who could be poached by other countries, Southgate was looking at things in a pretty philosophical manner:

Do you think Gunn will end up playing for Scotland, or England?
