The Irishman has really struggled to break into the Hoops’ first-team since moving to Parkhead in the summer of 2017 but has seen his opportunities to stake a claim increase significantly since Neil Lennon’s arrival as interim manager in February.
Indeed, Hayes was given the nod to start this afternoon’s vital cup tie against his former employers ahead of the likes of Scott Sinclair and Timo Weah and he certainly didn’t disappoint.
Hayes’ lung-bursting runs down both flanks in the opening stages caused Aberdeen no end of problems, and his work-rate was rewarded early in the second-half after he was fouled inside the penalty area by Mikey Devlin – which handed Celtic their second goal from the penalty spot.
Hayes was subbed in the closing stages and replaced by Sinclair but his input certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Celtic fan-base on social media:
Celtic now face Hearts in the Scottish Cup final on May 25 – but do you think Hayes deserves a starting berth against the Jambos?
