Would Ashley Williams be a good fit at Rangers after his Everton release was confirmed today?

The Wales international has spent the last three years at Goodison Park, with the most recent one out on loan with Stoke.

In that time, he made 73 appearances for the Toffees in the Premier League and then 37 in the Championship – totalling 698 games in English football.

But Williams’ time at the top of the game in England might be over with his Everton release today.

And that could mean a move elsewhere for the 34-year-old former Swansea defender.

Rangers signed Gareth McAuley midway through last season and the 39-year-old centre back went on to play seven times for Steven Gerrard.

They also had Joe Worrall on loan from Nottingham Forest for the season.

But both have now left Ibrox – and that means Gerrard will have to bring in a couple of new centre halves to reinforce his squad.

Surely Williams will be on his radar then?

The 34-year-old defender may be approaching the end of his career, but he is good enough to join Rangers and make an immediate impact.

And it would make sense for him to consider the move as Jermain Defoe, Connor Goldson, Jon Flanagan, Scott Arfield and Steven Davis have all made a similar switch over the last year.

Rangers fans – would you sign Williams?
