Celtic are ‘edging closer’ to solving their problematic right-back position by signing Tommy Smith from Huddersfield Town, according to reports this afternoon.
The Premiership champions are known to be in the market for a new full-back to replace the departed Mikael Lustig, with youngster Anthony Ralston currently the only out-and-out first-team right-back at Celtic Park.
And according to reports, Hoops boss Neil Lennon has his sights set on 27-year-old Smith, who managed just 16 appearances in all competitions for The Terriers, who were relegated from the English Premier League.
The Huddersfield Examiner are reporting that Smith’s price could be around the £3 million mark, so he’d definitely be within Celtic’s transfer budget, despite £10 million already being spent on Chris Jullien and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo.
Given Lustig’s exit coincided with the departures of Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic, it seems Lennon is keen to give his defence a thorough overhaul – but do you think Smith would be a shrewd buy?
