Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea wants to become the club’s new captain after agreeing a new long-term contract at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard – regarded by many to be the world’s best goalie – is entering the final 12 months of his current deal, and there have been fears the 28-year-old could decided to head for pastures new on a free transfer at the end of the forthcoming season.
Negotiations between the Red Devils and the de Gea camp have been long and protracted but the Manchester Evening News reported yesterday that a new six-year contract had finally been agreed, and is said to be worth a staggering £375,000 per week.
And speaking via the Guardian, de Gea has admitted he’d like to skipper United, following the departure of the former club captain Antonio Valencia.
He said: “I’ve been captain for some games.
“Of course, it is amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge.
“It’s amazing, so of course I’ll be really, really happy to captain.”
“We have to improve a lot. We are Manchester United; we need to fight for trophies.”
Do you think de Gea has the personality and what it takes to captain a club like Manchester United?
