Virgil Van Dijk is Now the Odds-On Favourite to Win the 2019 Ballon d’Or

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is now odd-on favourite to take home this year’s prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

The 27-year-old centre-back has helped transform the Reds’ defence since joining for a record £75 million from Southampton in January 2018, and played a crucial role in the Anfield club’s sixth European Cup triumph in Madrid last month.

And now it seems the former Celtic man is set to be rewarded in a big way for his exploits under Jurgen Klopp, with the Ballon d’Or looking more and more likely with every passing day.

Van Dijk is currently the 4/6 favourite with Sky Bet to lift the trophy, while Lionel Messi is narrowly behind him with odds of 6/5.

Five time winner Cristiano Ronaldo is the third favourite at 12/1 and Van Dijk’s teammate Sadio Mane is behind him with odds of 25/1.

The gong isn’t handed out until the end of the calendar year, but do you think van Dijk deserves to be the front-runner?
