Billy Gilmour has been named on the Chelsea bench for their clash with Sheffield United this afternoon.
The 18-year-old midfielder has been rewarded for some fine form with the club’s academy with a place in Frank Lampard’s squad.
And that will excite Scotland fans who want to see Gilmour make the breakthrough at Stamford Bridge.
Gilmour is actually the only out-and-out central midfielder on the Chelsea bench and could be a contender to get on if Lampard wants to change up any of Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic or Ross Barkley:
Chelsea beat Norwich 3-2 at Carrow Road last week and will want to follow that up with three points at home to newly-promoted Sheffield today.
Gilmour is yet to make his Chelsea debut after making the move from Rangers to Stamford Bridge two years ago.
He’s been a mainstay in the youth team over the last two seasons and may have been eyeing a loan away this summer.
But so far that hasn’t materialised and it looks like Lampard is keen on involving him in the first team.
