The veteran midfielder, now 35, once played alongside Gerrard not only for his country but for Liverpool, where he was once a £20 million signing from Aston Villa.
Released by boyhood club Middlesbrough at the end of last season, Downing ended-up signing a short-term deal with Blackburn Rovers and stayed in the English Championship, but it seems he could’ve ended up turning out at Ibrox this season for the Gers.
Speaking via Teeside Live, Downing explained: “That was another option. I know Steven [Gerrard] so I spoke to him but he had a few players already in the pipeline and I need to play games.
“He already had a big squad at Rangers – would I have played as many games as I would have liked to? I don’t know.
“At Blackburn I will be involved a lot more and that was the main decision to go there.”
Rangers have signed several wingers this summer, with Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Brandon Barker all joining Gerrard’s Gers, and Andy King seemingly set to join from Leicester on-loan, but would Downing have brought a level of experience and know-how that the younger signings perhaps don’t possess?
Or have Rangers dodged a bullet by missing out on signing Downing on this occasion?
