Robin van Persie has fully explained why he left Arsenal for Manchester United back in 2012.

The former Dutch striker shocked world football nine years ago when he swapped the Gunners for their rivals United.

At the time, many believed van Persie had knocked back a new deal to sign for the Old Trafford side on a free transfer.

But the Dutchman has now clarified that whole situation – and revealed that the Gunners never offered him a new deal.

Instead, he revealed that Arsenal were happy to let him walk away after a disagreement over how the club could achieve success.

And he signed for United because he got the best feeling from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Speaking on BT Sport before Arsenal’s win over Burnley at the Emirates this afternoon, van Persie said:

Will Arsenal fans understand van Persie’s reasons for leaving them after eight years to sign for one of their rivals?

At United, van Persie scored 30 goals in his first season to help the Red Devils win the Premier League title.
