The ex-Celtic defender is known for his pace, power, ability to read danger and uncompromising tackles, but today he showed the sort of finesse that most attacking midfielders would be proud of.
With Liverpool trailing in the second-half after an opening goal from their ex-player Raheem Sterling, manager Jurgen Klopp threw the kitchen sink at City, and it eventually paid off when Joel Matip headed home in the 77th minute.
But whilst it was the Cameroon international claiming the adulation, it was definitely van Dijk who was deserving of the credit for his delightfully cushioned cross:
